Water Garden Maintenance Checklist

    • Spring:
    • Start up includes setting in pumps if removed, inspect filters for cracks.
    • Clean or replace the filtration media. Repair as necessary. 
    • Remove debris from the winter (pond could still have the net covering over it from the winter.)
    • Fertilize all aquatic plants in the pond.
    • Potting of plants: Water lilies, bogs, lotus
    • Beneficial bacteria will be put into the pond to start the biological action in the filter and the pond.
    • If a partial water change is completed usually 25% to 33%then water conditioners will be added based on water volume. Stress Coat Chlorine, and Heavy Metal Remover Beneficial bacteria, Raise all the bog plants to the upper levels
       
    • Fall:
    • Drain and clean.
    • Add water conditioners same as above.
    • Cut back all aquatic plants; put the bog plants on the bottom with the Water lilies.
    • Remove any debris
    • Net the pond to help eliminate debris from falling leaves whose decomposition produces methane gas which is very toxic to fish. This is strongly recommended.
    • Winterization:
    • Remove the pump, drain the pipes to the filter and falls and store pump.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

    • If the pump is a submersible then the waterfall pipe should be disconnected and a bubblier extension can be installed for the winter to aerate the water and keep the ice from freezing completely over the surface.
    • The filtration system should be drained and cleaned.
    • Install pond de-icer and guard.
    • Make sure net is taught over the water.
    • Monthly maintenance:
    • Plant fertilizing
    • Water testing. Do partial water change if necessary. 25%
    • Add water conditioners if necessary.
    • Clean pump intake.
    • Backwash or clean filter and media.
    • Cut off dead leaf material.
    • Check or observe fish for parasites or disease. Treat if necessary.
