Humid subtropical. That's the kind of climate our lovely state is described as having. Well, we like the word "subtropical". "Humid"? Not so much. We don't get the dry heat of California or the persistent cold of Maine; instead we have moisture. And not just the moisture, it's the spring pollen and red clay (especially in East Tennessee, we're quite familiar with the clay). Our state, wonderful as it is, is one of the most demanding environments for home exteriors. The moisture allows for algal growth, the pollen feeds it, and the red clay—well, the clay does its own thing, but it makes a mess of clinging to a surface and refuses to come off, only adding to the problem.

It seems a hopeless circumstance, but stepping into the game with good knowledge about all this is key. For one, soft-washing dominates. With Tennessee being a breeding ground for algae, you need a solution that'll kill it at the root. Secondly, morning appointments are the way to go. Before the sun's fully up, before the humidity has a chance to rise—that's when we strike.
